Final assessments

So the final assessments for my degree are over at last, it has been a long time coming. I will try and post some images of my main installation piece but it doesn't really photograph well- one of those 'you had to be there' kind of things.

The space, or air around us is both what separates us, and connects us. As we move through space, so that space moves through us in the form of breath. A space can create an invisible barrier isolating us with emptiness and silence. Crossing that gap is a reaching out, a form of communication, a leap of faith.
Alison's art practice explores this intimate relationship between figure and space, through an observation of both movement and stillness. Her work uses both digital photography and video, challenging each medium's specific relationship to movement, and the ability of the lens to create a distance and define a space. Drawing is also an integral part of her art practice, translating the digital information recorded on camera through a physical process.

Exhibition at the Brick Oven, Bantry

An exhibition of 14 limited edition photographs, mounted on aluminium opened at the Brick Oven from this weekend. The photographs explore movement, and its counterpoint, stillness. The isolation, self control and purposefulness of a bird in flight through apparently empty space is framed and confined by the camera's lens. This conscious use of the body to negotiate a space is echoed by athletes and dancers alike. Using longer exposures, and layering techniques as well as straight forward photography, a moment in time is captured and the empty spaces made more potent by the figure moving through them.
